In the 19th century, the word trek evolved from the Africaan word trekken meaning “a stage in a journey by ox wagon.” The word, of course, still implies a journey, but of a more challenging kind! A variety of trekking options is yours at Destination Himalaya. In India, we trek in untrammeled areas of the Zanskar region of Ladakh, and to the base of Kangchenjunga in Sikkim. We hike to Everest from Nepal in the south and from Tibet in the north. The revered Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Tibet are on our trek list, as are the sacred mountains, Kawakarpo in Yunnan and Chomolhari in Bhutan.
In even the most remote areas of Asia's mountain ranges there are villages and communities whose inhabitants are as curious about you as you are about them. It is truly a delight and a privilege to learn something of these people and cultures in an environment so very far removed from the western world. Each and every trek is both a wilderness experience and a cultural odyssey. From our inception, the mighty Himalaya have been our specialty...indeed, this is why we call ourselves Destination Himalaya!

Trek to Everest – Nepal
April 21 – May 9, 2014
Himalaya – the name says it all. Straddling the border between Tibet and its southerly neighbor, the Kingdom of Nepal, the world’s tallest mountains soar to the heavens, seemingly piercing the unimaginably blue Tibetan skies. For the peoples of the Himalayan kingdoms, these mountains are sacred; for on their lofty heights dwell the gods and goddesses of the Indic religious traditions of Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism.
On this exciting trek to Everest’s South Face, we start by taking the breathtaking mountain flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. We then undertake an eleven day trek in Khumbu, land of the Sherpa, to view Everest’s majestic south face....... more |

Trekking in Sikkim
Sikkim, bounded by Tibet to the north, Bhutan to the east, Nepal to the west and the plains of India to the south, was a Buddhist monarchy until recently. Travel to Sikkim became restricted soon after it was inducted into India in the early seventies, and only now Sikkim is slowly opening up for tourism.
We join the traditional trail to Kanchenjunga at Dzongri and continue to our high point at Goecha La. We also visit the cities of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. ...... more

The Munsel-Ling School: Spiti
Spiti Valley, a breathtaking land set in the far reaches of Northern India’s Himalayan peaks. Here, subsistence farmers cultivate small plots of land using snow melt from the Himalayas. This isolation preserved the Spiti culture and traditions, but left the children far behind, without opportunity for education. A monk, Lama Tashi Namgyal (an Honoree at the 2009 "Unsung Heroes of Compassion" presided by His Holiness the Dalai Lama), recognized that something must be done about this deficit and, in 1996, opened a school in Spiti Valley itself. This school is called Munsel-Ling or “Place Illuminating the Darkness” and has been .........more
